Graduate Students

Graduate Students

A word of advice to the potential graduate students

Quite often I am approached by graduate students who want to work with me toward a PhD thesis. My area of research is mostly on computational algebraic geometry with emphasis on moduli spaces, algebraic curves and their automorphisms, Jacobians etc.
For students who intend to work on this area I would recommend to start reading the following books:
  • An introduction to commutative algebra, Atyah & MacDonald
  • Algebraic curves, Fulton
  •

This area requires a strong background in algebra, complex analysis, and algebraic topology.  Courses that I recommend you to take here at Oakland University are as follows:

  Algebra  Topology/Analysis
Enter the program with MTH 475-476 or equivalent Enter the program with MTH 452-453 or equivalent.

Optional courses
  • Arithmetic Geometry (occasionally offered)
  • Algebraic curves

It is very important that you pick an advisor by the end of your second year  in graduate school.  Our program has a very strict rule of funding PhD students only for 5 years.
Current graduate students
  • Fred Thompson
  • Haissam Badih (Computer Science)
